Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to take a Postal test?
Postal tests are used to identify which applicants are best suited for particular jobs. Plus, hiring based upon US Postal exam scores prevents any form of discrimination.

How do I apply for US Postal exams?
There’s no easy answer to this question because there’s no such thing as regularly scheduled Postal tests. Each Postal district gives Postal tests whenever it chooses. Find more on how to apply for U.S. Postal exams here.

What’s on the Postal tests?
All US Postal exams are different because each tests you for skills related to the job(s) it fills. For details on the content of various U.S. Postal exams, choose an exam here.

How do they score Postal tests?
On all U.S. Postal exams, 70 is the passing score, and 100 is the top score (without veterans preference points). However, the scoring formulas vary from one Postal test to another. See Pathfinder’s study guides for particular US Postal exam scoring formulas.

Why should I prepare for a Postal test?
Postal tests carry very high failure rates because they test you for unfamiliar job-related skills, and they force you to work at inhuman speeds. A high US Postal exam score calls for knowledge of exam content, unique test taking strategies, and extensive practice with realistic sample tests. In other words, a high score calls for an up-to-date and effective U.S. Postal exam study guide.

What do they do with the Postal test scores?
If you pass the US Postal exam, your name is placed on a list ranked in order by score. As jobs become available, the highest name/score on the list is called in. After a couple of years, they discard the old list, give the U.S. Postal exam again, and build a new list.

Can I transfer my U.S. Postal exam score to another location where I want to work?
You can transfer your score from one location to another only when the second location is giving the same U.S. Postal exam. But, if you transfer your score to the second location, your name is removed from the first location. It may be better to simply take the Postal test again at the second location so your name will be listed in both locations.
